Upon return from an out-of-state jaunt, I visited Groesbeck on Monday at mid-day for 18 holes. Mistake.

The course was under some repair. That's logical for a Monday ... You don't want to do repairs on the weekends, after all. My partner and I were told we could play the back nine for an $11 fee, per person.

We decided to go elsewhere. At Highland Hills north of DeWitt, we were able to walk 18 holes for $12 each. Hmm. 9 holes for $11, or 18 holes for $12. That's a tough comparison for the city.

Granted, we had to drive up old 27 to get to Highland. A Lansing-based golfer would save gas money playing at Groesbeck over suburban courses. Still, I suspect that if Groesbeck is to be viable long-term, its rates have to be more, shall we say, flexible.
